Is the Dacia Duster with Roof Tent a Good Rental Car for Iceland?
For two people planning to camp and spend part of their trip away from Iceland's main roads, the Duster covers both the driving and sleeping.
- The roof tent sleeps two. The James Baroud tent has a 125 × 210 cm sleeping area, so this setup is really aimed at a couple or two people travelling together.
- You can take the Duster on F-roads. That opens up Highland routes that aren't available to travellers renting a 2WD car.
- It's a manual. If you're not comfortable driving a manual transmission, choose one of Ring Rental's automatic roof-tent vehicles instead.
- You may get petrol or diesel. Ring Rental has both in this group, and the fuel type isn't guaranteed when you book.
When to Choose the Dacia Duster with Roof Tent
Summer: This is the season for the Dacia Duster with Roof Tent. You can build your trip around campsites rather than hotels and still include Highland roads once they're open. If you're heading toward Landmannalaugar or another Highland destination, check the specific route and conditions before setting out.
Winter: A roof tent isn't the obvious choice for an Icelandic winter, and we'd recommend the standard Dacia Duster instead. You still get the 4x4 without having to plan your nights around sleeping outside in Iceland's winter weather.
Spring and autumn: Shoulder season requires more planning. Temperatures can drop quickly, and Highland roads may still be closed in spring or begin closing again in autumn. If you're comfortable camping in colder weather and can keep your itinerary flexible, it's still an option.
Not the Right Car If…
- You don't drive a manual confidently. Iceland isn't the place to learn while you're also dealing with unfamiliar roads and changing weather.
- More than two people need somewhere to sleep. The vehicle has five seats, but the James Baroud roof tent sleeps two. Look at the Maxus T-60 + iKamper if you need a roof-tent setup for a larger group.
- You want the comfort of a motorhome. A roof tent gives you a place to sleep but not an indoor living space. If you want more room and built-in facilities, one of Ring Rental's Forster vans is a different kind of camping setup.
- Your route requires river crossings. F-road permission doesn't mean every Highland road is suitable for the Duster. Water crossings require extreme caution, and Ring Rental's restrictions should be checked before planning your route.
Driving the Dacia Duster with Roof Tent on Iceland's Roads
The Duster gives you more options once your trip takes you beyond the Ring Road. F35/Kjalvegur is one example of a Highland route where a permitted 4x4 gives you access that a 2WD rental doesn't have.
If Landmannalaugar is on your list, the Duster is also permitted on F-roads leading into the area, but check the exact route before leaving. Conditions and river crossings vary considerably between Highland roads.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can two people sleep in the Dacia Duster roof tent?
-
Yes. The James Baroud roof tent sleeps two and has a sleeping area of 125 × 210 cm. Although the Duster itself has five seats, this particular rental is best thought of as a camping setup for two people.
- Can I drive the Dacia Duster with Roof Tent on F-roads?
-
Yes. Ring Rental allows this Duster on Iceland's F-roads except F-249. That doesn't mean every F-road is suitable in every condition, though.
- Is the Dacia Duster with Roof Tent good for driving the Ring Road?
-
Yes. You don't need a 4x4 simply to drive the Ring Road, so the real advantage is being able to include roads that aren't open to 2WD rentals.
- Do I have to stay at campsites with a roof tent in Iceland?
-
Generally, yes. Plan your overnight stops around campsites rather than assuming you can park anywhere and sleep. Be aware of the protected areas and the Highlands where there may be camping restrictions.
Choose the Duster with Roof Tent if two of you want to camp your way around Iceland. With five-bag capacity and a two-person James Baroud tent, you have room for the trip without moving up to a larger campervan.
