Is the Dacia Duster a Good Rental Car for Iceland?
Yes, especially if your trip includes F-roads or you’re visiting Iceland in winter.
- It’s a 4x4 with high ground clearance. The Duster sits higher off the road than a standard 2WD car, which gives you more room over rough stretches of gravel road.
- It’s Ring Rental’s most popular car. You get a 4x4 without having to drive a large SUV, so it’s practical for everyday driving around Reykjavík as well as trips that take you farther out.
- There’s room for two large and two small bags. That should work well for a couple or a small group. With five people and a lot of luggage, though, the Duster is probably going to feel cramped.
- It’s manual. If you don’t regularly drive a manual transmission, choose an automatic 4x4 instead.
When to Choose the Dacia Duster
Summer: If you’re sticking to the Ring Road and the usual stops along the way, you may not need a 4x4. The Duster makes more sense when your itinerary includes the Highlands or Iceland’s F-roads. It’s permitted on F-roads, although some routes require a larger 4x4 and F-249 is off-limits to all Ring Rental vehicles.
Winter: Four-wheel drive can be useful when roads get snowy or slippery, especially if you’ll be covering a lot of ground outside Reykjavík. It still comes down to the weather. Some days, the right decision might be to wait out a storm or change your plans, no matter what you rented.
Spring and autumn: Conditions can change quickly, and Highland roads may still be closed in spring or begin closing again as winter approaches. If an F-road is part of your itinerary, check road.is before you leave rather than assuming it will be open.
Not the Right Car If…
- You don’t drive a manual. Ring’s Dacia Dusters are manual, and Iceland is not the place to learn. If you need an automatic 4x4, look at the Suzuki Vitara instead.
- You’re traveling with five people and a lot of luggage. Five people fit, but five people with large suitcases will need more luggage space.
- Your plans call for something more serious than a compact 4x4. F-road permission doesn’t mean the Duster is right for every Highland route. Some roads require a larger 4x4.
- You don’t actually need a 4x4. For a summer trip sticking to Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, the Ring Road, and other paved routes, a smaller 2WD rental may make more sense.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I drive a Dacia Duster on F-roads in Iceland?
-
Yes, the Dacia Duster is permitted on Iceland’s F-roads, but not every F-road is suitable for every 4x4. Some Highland routes require a larger vehicle, and F-249 is off-limits to all Ring Rental vehicles.
- Is the Dacia Duster good for winter driving in Iceland?
-
Yes. Four-wheel drive is useful on snowy or slippery roads, particularly if you plan to spend time outside Reykjavík. Snow, ice, high winds, and road closures can still change your plans.
- How much luggage fits in a Dacia Duster?
-
The Duster has room for two large and two small bags. That works well for a couple or small group, but five people traveling with large suitcases will probably want a vehicle with more luggage space.
- Dacia Duster or Suzuki Vitara: which is better for Iceland?
-
Choose the Duster if you’re comfortable driving a manual and plan to spend more time on rougher roads. The Suzuki Vitara is an automatic 4x4, so it makes more sense if an automatic transmission is a priority. Both are permitted on F-roads, subject to Ring Rental’s restrictions.
If your trip calls for a 4x4 and you’re comfortable driving a manual, the Dacia Duster is an easy choice. Check the weather and road conditions before you set out, especially if you’re heading into the Highlands.
