Rent a Ford Kuga in Iceland | 4x4 | Automatic
The Ford Kuga is an automatic 4x4 for travellers planning F-road driving, a winter road trip, or both. Ring Rental’s Kugas are 2023–2024 diesel models with room for five people and four bags. Compared with some of the smaller hybrids in the fleet, the Kuga is better for more demanding F-road driving.

Is the Ford Kuga a Good Rental Car for Iceland?
Yes. The Kuga earns its place when F-roads are actually part of the itinerary, rather than something you might decide to try along the way.
- It makes sense for a Highlands-focused trip. If Landmannalaugar and F208 are on your summer itinerary, the Kuga gives you the required 4x4 and an automatic transmission. F-road conditions vary, though, and being permitted on F208 doesn't mean every approach or river crossing is suitable.
- Winter is another reason to choose it. With 4x4 and an automatic transmission, the Kuga is great for longer winter road trips.
- There’s room for four bags. That makes the Kuga a better fit for groups carrying more luggage than some of the smaller 4x4s.
- Ring Rental’s Kugas are relatively new. The current group includes 2023–2024 diesel models.
When to Choose the Ford Kuga
Summer: This is when the Kuga's F-road capability is most likely to matter. Highland roads don't open on a fixed date each year, so check the route you plan to drive before setting out. F-249 remains off-limits.
Winter: The Kuga's 4x4 and automatic transmission suit longer winter itineraries, but your plans still need to follow the weather. If a road closes or conditions deteriorate, having a 4x4 doesn't change that.
Spring and autumn: A Kuga may be more vehicle than you need for a straightforward paved-road itinerary. But if you’re travelling farther or expect more challenging road conditions, having 4x4 may be worth the upgrade.
Not the Right Car If…
- Your itinerary doesn’t require a 4x4. If you’re staying on paved roads and other roads open to 2WD vehicles, you may be paying for features that you don't need.
- Fuel cost is one of your biggest concerns. The Kuga is a larger diesel 4x4. If keeping the vehicle smaller is more important than having its F-road capability and luggage room, compare it with one of Ring Rental’s compact 4x4s.
- You need more than four bags of luggage space. Five people can sit in the Kuga, but a group bringing several large suitcases may need one of Ring Rental’s larger options.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Ford Kuga a good car for driving Iceland’s Ring Road?
-
Yes. The Kuga has more capability than you need for the Ring Road itself. If Ring Road is only part of your itinerary, having a 4x4 opens up other routes too.
- Is diesel easy to find in Iceland?
-
Yes. Diesel is widely available at Icelandic fuel stations, so driving a diesel rental doesn’t require a special refuelling plan.
- Is the Ford Kuga too big for Reykjavík?
-
No, but Reykjavík alone isn't really where the Kuga earns its keep. If most of your holiday will be in the city and on nearby paved roads, you probably don't need this much vehicle.
- Can I drive a Ford Kuga to Landmannalaugar?
-
Yes. The Ford Kuga is permitted on F-roads, including F208 to Landmannalaugar. Check which route you plan to take and current road conditions before you leave, especially where river crossings are involved.
The Kuga is for the trip where 4x4 capability matters rather than simply being nice to have.
