Rent a Hyundai i20 in Iceland | 2WD | Manual

You don’t necessarily need a 4x4 to visit Iceland. If you’re traveling as a couple and your plans mostly include Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, and other paved roads, the Hyundai i20 may be all the car you need. It’s small, easy to get around in, and holds three bags. Just know its limits: it’s 2WD and isn’t permitted on F-roads, road 550, or road 35.

Is the Hyundai i20 a Good Rental Car for Iceland?

Yes, as long as your itinerary matches what a small 2WD car is designed to do.

  • Not every Iceland trip requires a 4x4. If Reykjavík and the Golden Circle make up most of your itinerary, there’s no reason to rent a bigger car just because you’re in Iceland.
  • It seats five, but we wouldn’t choose it for five people on a long road trip. The three-bag luggage limit makes much more sense for a couple or maybe three people who pack light.
  • Ring Rental’s i20s are 2020–2023 models. They’re a smaller option for travelers who plan to spend most of their trip around Reykjavík and on paved roads.
  • There are limits on where you can take it. The i20 is 2WD and cannot be driven on F-roads, road 550, or road 35. If any of those are part of your plans, choose a 4x4 instead.

When to Choose the Hyundai i20

Summer: This is probably the best time for the i20. Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, and plenty of other popular stops are accessible without leaving paved roads.

Winter: Pay more attention to how far you plan to travel. The i20 is an option for Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, and some surrounding areas, but for a longer winter road trip, consider moving up to one of Ring Rental’s 4x4s.

Spring and autumn: Don’t choose based on the month alone. Look at your route. If you’re staying on roads where 2WD vehicles are permitted, the i20 can still work. If your route requires a 4x4, you'll need to move up to another vehicle.

Not the Right Car If…

  • You’re planning to drive F-roads. The i20 is 2WD, so F-roads are off-limits. The same goes for roads 550 and 35.
  • You need an automatic. Ring Rental’s Hyundai i20s are manual, so you’ll need to choose another vehicle if you aren’t comfortable driving one.
  • Your winter plans go well beyond Reykjavík and the Golden Circle. The i20 can work for more local winter trips, but Ring Rental has 4x4 options that are better suited to longer winter itineraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive a Hyundai i20 on F-roads in Iceland?

No. The Hyundai i20 is 2WD and isn’t permitted on F-roads. Roads 550 and 35 are also off-limits to Ring Rental’s 2WD vehicles. If any of these roads are part of your plans, you’ll need a 4x4.

Is a Hyundai i20 big enough for an Iceland road trip?

For two people, yes. The i20 seats five, but keep the three-bag luggage limit in mind. A couple should have plenty of room. If you’re traveling with four or five people and everyone has a suitcase, choose something bigger.

Is the Hyundai i20 good for driving the Golden Circle?

Yes. You don’t need a 4x4 just to drive the Golden Circle, so the i20 works well for this kind of trip. It’s also a good option if you’re spending part of your visit in Reykjavík and don’t need a larger vehicle.

Do I need a 4x4 in Iceland instead of a Hyundai i20?

It depends on where you’re going. If your plans keep you on paved roads, you may not need a 4x4 at all. Once you start adding F-roads or other roads where 2WD vehicles aren’t permitted, the i20 is no longer an option.

For couples and smaller groups sticking to paved roads, the Hyundai i20 is a practical option, especially for trips around Reykjavík and the Golden Circle.

5/5

Really great experience with this highly professional Icelandic firm. Clean and highly reliable vehicle in great working order. Friendly, efficient and professional service from the Keflavik staff. Quick pick up and drop to and from airport to hire office - it's only about a 5 minute journey in their shuttle bus. Takk fyrir!

5/5

We rented a car with a tent top and drove around Iceland for two weeks. The car (Dacia Duster) was exceptionally maintained and the tent kept the 24-hour sun OUT. Emil was helpful; the car maintenance crew was delightful. They picked us up at the airport and drove us to our hotel when we returned the car. I would 100% give them my business again.

5/5

I rented a car with this company for the second time while visiting Iceland, and once again everything went smoothly. The service was quick and responsive, and they carefully went over all the existing damages with me beforehand. It felt very reliable and transparent, which made the whole experience stress-free.
