Rent a Jeep Renegade with Roof Tent in Iceland | 4x4 | Automatic

The Jeep Renegade with Roof Tent is for two people who want to camp around Iceland, drive F-roads, and would rather have an automatic than a manual. It's a 2022 hybrid petrol 4x4 with a James Baroud roof tent and F-road access. Although the jeep seats five, the tent sleeps two.

Is the Jeep Renegade with Roof Tent a Good Rental Car for Iceland?

The Jeep Renegade is a practical choice if you want to camp and need an automatic for your F-road plans.

  • The James Baroud roof tent sleeps two. You get a 125 × 210 cm sleeping area while keeping room in the vehicle for five bags.
  • It's an automatic. That's one of the biggest reasons to choose the Renegade over the Dacia Duster with Roof Tent.
  • You can take it on F-roads. The Renegade is a 4x4 and is permitted on Iceland's F-roads except F-249.
  • It's a hybrid petrol vehicle. If you're covering a lot of kilometres, confirm the fuel economy before comparing the total trip cost with Ring Rental's other roof-tent vehicles.

When to Choose the Jeep Renegade with Roof Tent

Summer: Summer opens up the most possibilities. You can camp along the Ring Road and add F-road trips once Highland roads open for the season. If you're used to an automatic at home, you also don't have to add an unfamiliar manual transmission to everything else you're getting used to.

Winter: The 4x4 is useful in winter, but the roof tent is another matter. For most winter trips, we'd look at one of Ring Rental's standard 4x4s and sleep indoors instead.

Spring and autumn: If cold nights don't bother you, camping is still possible. Highland access is much less predictable, though. Roads can remain closed well into spring or begin closing again as conditions deteriorate in autumn. Check road.is before building the trip around an F-road.

Jeep Renegade vs Dacia Duster with Roof Tent

These two rentals are geared toward almost the same traveller. Both sleep two in a 125 × 210 cm James Baroud tent, carry five bags, have 4x4, and are permitted on F-roads except F-249.

The decision may come down to one thing: the Jeep is automatic and the Duster is manual. If you don't drive a manual confidently, take the Jeep. If transmission doesn't matter to you, compare the rate for your dates and decide from there.

Not the Right Car If…

  • More than two people need somewhere to sleep. Five people can sit in the Jeep, but they can't all sleep on top of it. The Maxus T-60 + iKamper sleeps up to four.
  • You aren't planning to camp. If you're staying in hotels and guesthouses, choose the standard vehicle instead of paying for a roof tent you won't use.
  • You want an enclosed place to sleep. A campervan or motorhome gives you indoor sleeping and living space. The Renegade doesn't.
  • You're choosing it only because it's a 4x4. You don't need 4x4 simply to drive the Ring Road in summer. It becomes useful when your itinerary includes roads where 2WD rentals aren't permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can sleep in the Jeep Renegade roof tent?

Two. The James Baroud roof tent has a 125 × 210 cm sleeping area. Although the Renegade has five seats, don't mistake seating capacity for sleeping capacity. If three or four people are travelling together and everyone needs a bed, you'll need a different roof-tent vehicle or a campervan.

Can I drive the Jeep Renegade with Roof Tent on F-roads?

Yes. Ring Rental permits the Jeep Renegade on Iceland's F-roads except F-249. F-road permission doesn't tell you what the road will look like on the day you arrive, though. Check road.is before setting out and make sure the specific route is suitable for your vehicle.

Is the Jeep Renegade with Roof Tent automatic?

Yes. The Jeep Renegade has an automatic transmission. That's an important distinction if you're comparing it with the manual Dacia Duster with Roof Tent.

Is the Jeep Renegade with Roof Tent good for the Westfjords?

Yes. The Jeep Renegade is a compact 4x4, which makes it a practical size for the narrow roads and gravel sections you'll encounter in parts of the Westfjords. The roof tent also gives you the option to camp along the way. Check road and weather conditions each day, especially outside the main summer months.

The Jeep Renegade is for two people, five bags and includes automatic transmission and access beyond Iceland's paved roads. If a manual transmission is the one thing putting you off the Duster, this is the obvious alternative.

Really great experience with this highly professional Icelandic firm. Clean and highly reliable vehicle in great working order. Friendly, efficient and professional service from the Keflavik staff. Quick pick up and drop to and from airport to hire office - it's only about a 5 minute journey in their shuttle bus. Takk fyrir!

5/5

We rented a car with a tent top and drove around Iceland for two weeks. The car (Dacia Duster) was exceptionally maintained and the tent kept the 24-hour sun OUT. Emil was helpful; the car maintenance crew was delightful. They picked us up at the airport and drove us to our hotel when we returned the car. I would 100% give them my business again.

5/5

I rented a car with this company for the second time while visiting Iceland, and once again everything went smoothly. The service was quick and responsive, and they carefully went over all the existing damages with me beforehand. It felt very reliable and transparent, which made the whole experience stress-free.
