Is the Maxus T-60 with Roof Tent a Good Rental Car for Iceland?
For three or four people who want to camp together, the Maxus T-60 has something Ring Rental's smaller roof-tent vehicles don't, which is enough sleeping space for the group.
- The iKamper sleeps up to four. Ring Rental's other roof-tent vehicles in this group sleep two.
- The Maxus T-60 has space for four bags. A group of four will need to think about luggage differently than a couple travelling in one of the smaller roof-tent vehicles.
- It's an automatic diesel 4x4 pickup. Ring Rental permits the Maxus on F-roads except F-249.
- It's a 2026 model. This is one of the newer vehicles in Ring Rental's camping fleet.
When to Choose the Maxus T-60 with Roof Tent
Summer: This is the main season for the roof-tent setup. You can build the trip around campsites and include F-roads once the routes you want to drive are open.
Winter: Four people sleeping in a roof tent is a very different trip in winter. If everyone would rather sleep inside, compare the Maxus with Ring Rental's four-person Forster motorhomes instead.
Shoulder season (spring and autumn): Think about how comfortable everyone will be sleeping outside once the nights turn colder. Don't count on Highland roads being open either. Check road.is before heading that way.
Space, Seating and Luggage in the Maxus T-60
The Maxus seats five, but the iKamper sleeps up to four. That's an important distinction if you're travelling as a family of five. Everyone can ride in the vehicle, but you won't have sleeping space for all five in the roof tent.
The Maxus has space for four bags. If four people are travelling, you'll probably have more in the vehicle than the luggage you brought on the plane. Food, jackets, hiking gear, and other things you pick up along the way all need somewhere to go.
Soft bags may be easier to arrange than large hard-shell suitcases. If everyone in the group packs heavily, take the four-bag limit seriously before you book.
Not the Right Car If…
- Only two people need beds and you'd rather drive something smaller. Ring Rental has several two-person roof-tent vehicles, including the Dacia Duster, Jeep Renegade, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Ford Kuga, and Hyundai Tucson.
- Everyone wants to sleep inside. The Maxus is still a roof-tent setup. A motorhome gives you an enclosed place to sleep.
- You're not comfortable driving a pickup. The Maxus is different from the smaller SUVs in the rest of the roof-tent fleet. You'll be driving it every day, so don't choose it based on sleeping capacity alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How many people can sleep in the Maxus T-60 roof tent?
-
Up to four people can sleep in the iKamper. Ring Rental's other roof-tent vehicles in this group sleep two. The Maxus is therefore the one to look at if three or four people want to camp together without splitting between two vehicles or finding a separate sleeping arrangement.
- Can I drive the Maxus T-60 with Roof Tent on F-roads?
-
Yes. The Maxus T-60 can go on F-roads except F-249. Check the road you plan to drive before heading into the Highlands. Road closures and changing conditions can still affect your plans, even when the vehicle itself is permitted on the road.
- Is the Maxus T-60 suitable for a family camping trip?
-
It can be, but check the numbers against your family first. The Maxus has five passenger seats, while the iKamper sleeps up to four and has space for four bags. A family of four can stay within those listed capacities. A family of five would need another sleeping arrangement.
- Maxus T-60 or a motorhome: which should I rent?
-
The biggest difference is where you'll sleep and where you plan to drive. The Maxus has an iKamper roof tent and can go on permitted F-roads. Ring Rental's four-person Forster motorhomes are 2WD, but everyone sleeps inside. If the Highlands are part of your trip, compare your planned roads before choosing between them.
For three or four campers, the Maxus lets you stay in one vehicle without moving to a 2WD motorhome. Just be realistic about luggage before four people arrive with four full-size suitcases and a week's worth of gear.
