Rent a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross in Iceland | 4x4 AWD | Automatic

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is an automatic 4x4 for travellers who want F-road access but don't need one of Ring Rental's larger SUVs. It’s a plug-in petrol hybrid, but you won’t need to plan your trip around charging stations because a charging cable isn’t included. It can be driven on F-roads, other than F-249, although it isn’t Ring Rental’s first choice for routes with river crossings.

Is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross a Good Rental Car for Iceland?

The Eclipse Cross works best for two to four people who want an automatic 4x4 and plan to spend some time beyond Iceland's main roads.

  • You can take it on F-roads. If the Highlands are part of your summer plans, you have access to roads that would be off-limits in a 2WD rental.
  • Ring Rental’s models are 2022–2024. They’re automatic and AWD, which may be more appealing if you want 4x4 but don’t want to spend your trip driving a manual.
  • Luggage space is limited. The Eclipse Cross seats five, but has room for four bags. If you’re travelling with a full car, make sure the luggage space works for your group before you book.
  • It’s a plug-in hybrid, with a catch. Ring Rental doesn’t provide a charging cable with this vehicle. For your rental, you’ll be using it as a petrol car rather than relying on charging.

When to Choose the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Summer: The Eclipse Cross works well if you want to add some Highland driving to a summer road trip without driving a manual. A route like F35/Kjalvegur is a better match for this vehicle than a Highland itinerary with significant river crossings. F-road openings change from year to year, so check the road before you set out.

Winter: Snowy or slippery roads are another reason you might choose the Eclipse Cross over a 2WD rental. You still have to pay attention to the forecast and road closures, of course.

Spring and autumn: Most of your trip may be on regular roads, but conditions can still change quickly this time of year. The Eclipse Cross gives you AWD without requiring you to drive one of Ring Rental's larger SUVs.

Not the Right Car If…

  • You’re packing heavily. Five seats don’t automatically mean luggage space for five people. If everyone is arriving with a large suitcase, look at one of Ring Rental’s roomier SUVs.
  • Your Highland itinerary includes significant river crossings. The Eclipse Cross is allowed on F-roads, but Ring Rental doesn’t consider this hybrid its strongest option for river crossings.
  • You’re renting it because you want to drive an electric vehicle. The Eclipse Cross is a plug-in hybrid, but Ring Rental does not include the charging cable. Plan to use petrol during your rental.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross good for driving the Ring Road?

Yes. You don't need a 4x4 for the Ring Road itself, but the Eclipse Cross gives you the option of adding roads to your itinerary that wouldn’t work in a 2WD rental, which is great if your trip combines the Ring Road with some Highland driving.

How many people is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross best for?

It seats five, but for a longer road trip, it may be more comfortable for two to four people, depending on how much you're bringing. If five people are travelling together with full-size luggage, look at one of Ring Rental's larger SUVs.

Should I rent the Eclipse Cross or a larger 4x4 in Iceland?

Start with your luggage and your Highland plans. The Eclipse Cross holds four bags and works for F-road trips that don't involve significant river crossings. If you're bringing more luggage orplanning a more demanding Highland route, one of Ring Rental's larger 4x4s may make more sense.

What should I check before taking a rental car into the Icelandic Highlands?

Start with the specific roads on your itinerary rather than assuming any 4x4 can handle them. Check current road conditions and closures before you go, and make sure the Eclipse Cross is suitable for the route you're planning, particularly if there are river crossings.

Before you book the Eclipse Cross, look at two things in particular: how much luggage you’re bringing and exactly which Highland roads you want to drive.

5/5

Really great experience with this highly professional Icelandic firm. Clean and highly reliable vehicle in great working order. Friendly, efficient and professional service from the Keflavik staff. Quick pick up and drop to and from airport to hire office - it's only about a 5 minute journey in their shuttle bus. Takk fyrir!

5/5

We rented a car with a tent top and drove around Iceland for two weeks. The car (Dacia Duster) was exceptionally maintained and the tent kept the 24-hour sun OUT. Emil was helpful; the car maintenance crew was delightful. They picked us up at the airport and drove us to our hotel when we returned the car. I would 100% give them my business again.

5/5

I rented a car with this company for the second time while visiting Iceland, and once again everything went smoothly. The service was quick and responsive, and they carefully went over all the existing damages with me beforehand. It felt very reliable and transparent, which made the whole experience stress-free.
