Rent a Suzuki Vitara in Iceland | 4x4 | Automatic

The Suzuki Vitara is a good choice if you want an automatic 4x4 without moving into one of Ring Rental’s larger SUVs. It’s a petrol hybrid and is allowed on F-roads, so you aren’t limited to the roads that allow 2WD vehicles. If your plans include significant river crossings, though, this probably isn’t the 4x4 for you.

Transmission: Automatic

Drive: 4x4

Luggage: 2 large bags

Is the Suzuki Vitara a Good Rental Car for Iceland?

Yes, particularly if you want an automatic 4x4 and plan to do some F-road driving.

  • The Vitara is allowed on F-roads. That means the Highlands can be part of your itinerary without renting one of Ring Rental’s larger 4x4s. F-249 is the exception.
  • It’s automatic. You don’t have to be comfortable driving a manual to get 4x4 and F-road access.
  • There’s room for five people, but only two large bags. If you’re filling every seat, take a realistic look at how much luggage everyone is bringing before you book.
  • There are some limits. Because the Vitara is a hybrid, Ring Rental doesn’t recommend it as strongly for routes that involve river crossings.

When to Choose the Suzuki Vitara

Summer: The Vitara works well for a summer road trip that mixes regular sightseeing with some time on F-roads. If you want to visit the Highlands but aren’t planning more difficult routes with river crossings, the Vitara may be all the 4x4 you need.

Winter: The Vitara gives you 4x4 for winter driving without putting you in a large SUV. You’ll still need to pay attention to the weather and road closures. Four-wheel drive helps, but it doesn’t make every road safe in bad conditions.

Spring and autumn: Your itinerary matters more than the season. If you’re staying on roads that allow 2WD vehicles, you may not need the Vitara at all. If F-roads are part of your plans, check road.is before you go.

Not the Right Car If…

  • Your Highland plans involve significant river crossings. The Vitara is allowed on F-roads, but Ring Rental has other 4x4s that are better suited to that kind of trip.
  • Five people are bringing five large suitcases. There are five seats, but luggage space is limited to two large bags. You’ll need something bigger.
  • You don’t actually need 4x4. If your whole itinerary stays on paved roads and other roads that allow 2WD vehicles, one of Ring Rental’s 2WD cars may be enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a large 4x4 to drive F-roads in Iceland?

Not always. It depends on the roads you plan to drive. The Vitara is permitted on F-roads except F-249, so a larger 4x4 isn’t automatically necessary. Look at the actual route before deciding how much vehicle you need.

Is the Suzuki Vitara big enough for five people?

There are five seats, but passenger space is only half the question. Ring Rental lists room for two large bags. Five people traveling light may be able to make that work, but five people with full-size suitcases should look at a larger vehicle.

Should I rent a Suzuki Vitara or a Dacia Duster in Iceland?

Both give you 4x4 and F-road access, but there are some important differences. The Vitara is automatic and hybrid, while Ring Rental’s Dusters are manual. If your route involves river crossings, the Duster may be the better one to consider.

What kind of Iceland trip is the Suzuki Vitara best for?

The Vitara works well if you want an automatic 4x4 but don’t need a large SUV. You can spend most of your trip on Iceland’s regular roads and still have the option of adding F-roads when conditions allow.

The Vitara gives you an automatic transmission and 4x4 without going straight to a larger SUV.

Look at the roads you actually plan to drive, especially in the Highlands, and decide from there.

5/5

Really great experience with this highly professional Icelandic firm. Clean and highly reliable vehicle in great working order. Friendly, efficient and professional service from the Keflavik staff. Quick pick up and drop to and from airport to hire office - it's only about a 5 minute journey in their shuttle bus. Takk fyrir!

5/5

We rented a car with a tent top and drove around Iceland for two weeks. The car (Dacia Duster) was exceptionally maintained and the tent kept the 24-hour sun OUT. Emil was helpful; the car maintenance crew was delightful. They picked us up at the airport and drove us to our hotel when we returned the car. I would 100% give them my business again.

5/5

I rented a car with this company for the second time while visiting Iceland, and once again everything went smoothly. The service was quick and responsive, and they carefully went over all the existing damages with me beforehand. It felt very reliable and transparent, which made the whole experience stress-free.
